Excerpt:  Two Roads
He killed my father. I’m having his baby.
He killed my father. I’m having his baby.
Those two sentences are on repeat in my head, the agony of the rolling waves almost too much for me to bear.
And the agony of my nausea slams into me again with the violent rock of the waves that carry us to safer shores. I think. I hope.
But really, how safe am I? I’m suddenly questioning everything, stuck in a vortex of swirling paranoia and doubt. Is Jase on Dornan’s side? He killed my father. He didn’t even try to deny it.
I can’t believe it, I can’t accept it, and I just wish I could think straight for five fucking minutes. I wish I didn’t feel like this. I’ve left one prison, the one Dornan constructed for me, only to be trapped in one of my own making. The one in my mind that goes over and over and over again.
I’m curled as tight as I can get into a ball on a bed in the main cabin of the boat. We must be going pretty fast, or be in some crazy swell, because I swear if the boat tilted a little more, it’d capsize.
The door is closed. I made Elliot promise he wouldn’t let Jase come in here. I’m going to have to face him eventually, but I just can’t face him now. I don’t want to hear his excuses, if he even has any. He killed my father.
I’ve never been afraid of drowning before, but right now, I’m terrified. Drowning in this ship. Drowning in lies and in blood. Drowning in my own treacherous deceit. For so long, I’ve had only one goal – to destroy Dornan. I was too busy focusing on his suffering to notice or care about my own, and now, I feel so damned broken. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to feel normal again.
In fact, come to think of it, I don’t even know what normal is.
I jump as a warm hand touches my shoulder.
“Hey,” a low voice murmurs beside me.
I turn over to see Elliot lying beside me, his pose mirroring mine. I can see water lashing against the small round window that looks out to the cruel sea we travel within.
“You’re shaking,” Elliot says, frowning as he reaches out a hand to me. Without thinking, I shrink back, an automatic response after three months of Dornan’s psychotic hands being the only ones to reach for me. Elliot’s face crumples into something resembling sadness—despair—as he reaches out to me again, slower this time, and pushes my lank hair back from my face.
Am I even here? I’m not sure. This could all be a dream. An elaborate, drug-induced hallucination. The thought makes me reel. Am I out? Or am I still in the basement? Is Elliot in front of me, or is it Dornan?
I scramble away from Elliot, clambering off the bed and backing up to the far end of the tiny room. Behind me, waves pound violently into the thick glass porthole, the only thing separating us from the deadly currents beyond. The movement of the waves catches my attention and I turn, mesmerized, as I press a trembling palm up to the freezing cold glass.
Am I here? Am I alive?
A nudge in my stomach, nothing more than a flutter really, propels me back to sanity.
Yes. I am here. I am here, while Elliot hovers behind me, and Jase and Luis are somewhere beyond the door that keeps me safe in this room.
And I am carrying a baby inside me. A baby that should never have existed.
And I don’t know if that’s a good thing or a terrible thing.

September 29, book release with Inkspell

The Private Internship blurb:

Sugar’s not so sweet and secrets can be deadly … especially with matters of the heart

Sienna’s bestie, Harper warned her not to intern for famous bad boy artist, Casper Mason. After all, he just fired Harper who helped Sienna get the interview. But the moment Sienna sees Casper—or Caz—sweaty and practically shirtless and swinging from chains while he works on his sculpture, she’s hooked. He’s the richest, hottest artist in New York, and he lives in the fabulous Williamsburg Sugar Factory. But he’s also an incorrigible game-player, who seems to relish challenging Sienna’s loyalty with a string of unsettling tests.

She knows she should get away fast. But by the time Sienna sneaks into his locked storage room and begins to unearth his dark and terrifying secret, she’s fallen way too hard for the handsome, charismatic Caz.

Review by Mariska Book Obsessive

4/5 Stars

This book starts of a bit slow. But then it tickles your fancy when best Friend Harper gets fired, but she is very evasive as to why exactly she got fired.

Sienna goes against her best friends wishes and goes for the interview with bad boy famous artist Casper Mason and gets the internship, because she needs this on her resume and she needs the money. She also needs to know what this man is hiding. He doesn't open up to her but plays crazy games with her and tests her every chance he gets.

His crazy disorganized art drives her OCD personality crazy, but she can’t help but fall for him. They help each other grow in their art, and Caz slowly opens up top Sienna.

But then it all gets ripped apart when Sienna breaks his trust and enters that secret room.

What will happen when Caz finds out? Will their relationship be strong and worth enough to save?

Review by Nadia Chief Obsessive Pimpette

***Obsessed by Books arc copy given in exchange for an honest review***
Be prepared to be swept away into the glamourous world of modern art.
Meet "Sienna Karr, ornery, slightly rebellious and definitely flawed" an artist that is looking for a well paid internship. She has her demons from her childhood and works hard to hide her OCD. Sienna is feisty and doesn't take any crap although she really needs a break.  Sienna has strong morals and is a very likeable character. Throughout the pages we learn why she has her hang ups and why she is the way she is. She battles her anxieties and tries to tap into her inner strength to become the artist she is destined to be.
Casper Mason is the hottest artist in town, crafting modern art pieces from spun sugar. His work is snapped up for millions and he is an enigma.  Nothing on Google and just a fairy tale story surrounding his rise in the glittering world of art.  He captures Sienna from the very first moment and something undeniable builds between them. He too has something hidden in his past and he shuts everyone out. Can Sienna break down the walls and unleash the truth?
This is an easy read with plot twists and hot hot sex scenes that are well written, “His hungry gaze slides down to my mouth. Yes, he's hungry. He can't hide that with games. His sensual, needy energy is so intense, I swear he could devour me - all of this before we've even grazed lips."
This is a must read for anyone who likes a steamy read...4 stars!

Excerpt
It’s blessedly warmer in here and I realize this warehouse is so enormous he’s only heated the renovated parts. In two of the corners Caz has deposited huge piles of sugar packets—ones tediously counted by spurned interns?
My attention is drawn to the larger of the piles. Its packets are shifting ever so slightly. Ah! The jig’s up; Caz is hiding under it. Sugary mosh pit here I come! I tiptoe forward, ever so slowly and pounce, landing with a shockingly loud crunch. Burrowing down into the packets, my hand hits a leathery cowboy boot. I grip onto the top lip for all its worth. “Tag!” I shriek. “Gotcha.”
Caz explodes upward, like a giant cake surprise, his hair all at wild angles. Grabbing me by the waist he pulls me down. We wrestle like kids, sending packets flying in all directions. He’s stronger than me, so it’s not long before his corded arms circle around me and pin me there, some big kid winning one over on his little brother or sister.
But Caz is not like a big brother, not at all. Not sure what we are now, as he gazes at me with his deep brown eyes, animated, sparkly and questioning. Wide, as if he’s seeing me clearly for the very first time. “You’re fun,” he whispers, his sculptural, perfect mouth so near mine.

Kitsy Clare author interview

How did you come up with the concept for Private Internship?
Private Internship is all about artists who live, love and work in New York City (and Brooklyn). I know this scene intimately because before I turned to writing novels as my main passion, I showed my paintings in galleries for years. In book two, Sienna lands a high-level internship with a rich, famous, and very bad-boy sculptor, Casper Mason. I set the novel in a real sugar factory that I lived near in Brooklyn. The place fascinated me. Caz creates installations there, using the piles of leftover sugar.

Is this book part of a series?
Yes, it is the second in my Art of Love series. The first is a novella called Model Position where artist Sienna has trouble deciding whether to date Erik, a mysterious live drawing model or Dave, the well-connected nephew of a trendy art dealer. Who would you choose? You don’t have to read the series in order.

How do you choose your characters’ names?
I love thinking up names of characters and titles and I always think them up before I set to writing a manuscript. I choose very carefully, because it really does make a difference. The name has to be matched to the personality, to their purpose and quest. For instance, Sienna’s love interest in Private Internship is named Casper Mason, Caz for short. Why Casper? Well, he’s carrying a deep and shameful secret, and as a result he has become a ghost of his former self. The nickname Caz also fits because even though he’s troubled he has a fun, charismatic side for sure. Sienna was also chosen consciously. She’s a visual artist, and Sienna is actually a color—a rich earthy tone.

Do you write while you listen to music?
I rarely listen to music while I write, though I love to daydream about my characters with music as a backdrop. It’s odd to me, because when I used to paint I always listened to music. The acts of painting and writing are so similar in many ways (creative, visual, narrative), yet in that one aspect, they are different for me. That said, I enjoy thinking up playlists for my novels. A Private Internship playlist would include “Factory Girl” by the Stones, and Jena Irene’s version of “Bring me to Life” by Evanescence.

Do you write in other genres, or for other ages?
Yes, I write YA using my name Catherine Stine. I have a YA horror, Dorianna launching on October 24 with Evernight Teen. It’s a fresh twist for the Internet generation on Oscar Wilde’s A Picture of Dorian Gray. Just in time for Halloween, too! I like writing for teens and adults.

Tell me something about you that may shock your readers?
I’m almost a music groupie, and I’ve met many a musician. To name a few: Buddy Guy and Junior Wells, Mark Anthony and Jamar Rogers from season two of the Voice. I’ve also gone to backstage parties with John McLaughlin, and the entire set of finalists for this year’s American Idol. Don’t believe me? Check out my recent Facebook photos. J

Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
A writer’s first job is to entertain. A writer’s second task is to pull a reader in through the characters’ emotions. I tell my students when I teach workshops that each scene must have an emotional heart. This also holds true for the novel as a whole. Part of the craft is voice, and the other is the ability to make us care deeply about the fictional world. Sometimes the characters are too formulaic. But even if they are interesting, if there’s not enough action or high stakes to propel the story, we don’t care enough. One must examine plot, voice, character and stakes—all of it to diagnose issues and revise properly. Take your time and polish your manuscript completely. Good luck!

A hint of what you’re working on next?
Well, I am crafting the plot for book three in The Art of Love series. Who will Sienna end up with? That is the pressing question! Any guesses? Plus, I am halfway through writing an historical paranormal set in 1932 on the Jersey shore. The lead is a witch, but she doesn’t know it—yet…

~ ABOUT THE AUTHOR ~
d. Nichole King

Iowa is my home. I was born and raised here, and even though I spent most of my younger years dying to get out, I can't imagine a better place to work, play, and raise my kids. Yes, I like the familiarity (but not the cold after December!)

I've always been a book nerd. I read ... a lot! The reason why can be summed up in one of my favorite quotes: "A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies. The man who never reads lives only one." --George R. R. Martin, A Dance with Dragons

I graduated from Central College in Pella, Iowa with a liberal arts degree in Psychology and Chemistry. Along with my amazing husband, I live in small-town Iowa as a full-time mom to my four adorable children. Oh, and our dog, Peaches.

When not writing, reading, or taking care of the everyday chores, I love to scrapbook, play board and card games, and watch movies.
