Blake:
I am a brother
I am a police detective I am a contract killer I don’t want to love I don’t want to feel I don’t want … EMPATHY.
They say some people are born with decreased activity in the front central lobe causing them a deficiency in empathy. Maybe that’s true about me but whether I was born this way or created in a moment of evil, empathy was something I didn’t possess until her green eyes met mine in the mirror and I couldn’t take her life.
I didn’t want to feel, didn’t want this woman in my life complicating how I lived but she was there at every turn. Sent to haunt me for my sins. Her light so bright she provoked a shadow from everyone she touched. When a job turns bad quickly altering my life forever I’m forced to feel. When nothing is making sense I’m forced to face truths I never would recover from. When life drowns you in its cruelty you don’t know which way the current will drag you or who you’ll become once you re-surface.
Melody:
I was a daughter
I was a student I was a victim Did I have his love? Did I make him feel? Did I have his empathy? When the actions of a soulless killer forces sorrow into my veins I never dreamed the man healing my wounds would be the one to leave the worst scar. His love would scar my soul. Scars are permanent; I will never feel the relief from them. Will I learn to live with them, remember why I have them and learn never to let him close enough to inflict more? Will I eventually cover them… like tattoos coating them with new memories, new love and new starts? I didn’t know these answers because the pain was too suffocating, the only thing I knew was they will always be under the surface lingering. He had scars too, from his sins. There is nothing that can cover them, they were too deep, too ugly, too dark and they marked us both forever.

REVIEW BY MAZZY BOSS LADY

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

**** I received this arc in exchange for an honest review ****

OMG this book is a serious head f**k, I loved reading it, it's one of those books that has you stuck right to the very end.

Blake sexy Blake, a police detective, contact killer and a devoted brother to Ryan. He is cold hearted, does not feel remorse and doesn't care about anything but his brother Ryan until he meets Melody.

The sweet sweet Melody such a tragic event, she just wants to get lost. She's friends with Ryan, and literary bumps into Blake.

The chemistry in this book is so hot, the sex is sizzling.

I really didn't see the story turning out the way it did.

Ker Dukey I must say that this is one of the best books that I have read, it's incredible.

It has everything you can want from a read, from twists, emotional, sizzling sex, sexy men, deragement and very very dark.

Seriously you have to read this.

I have always had a passion for storytelling, whether it be through lyrics or bed time stories with my sisters. I wanted to be an actress growing up so I could live many roles but I learned early on that my mind was too active... I would want to change the script.I would watch films and think of ways they could of improved the story if they took another direction so i thought it best that i tell my own. My mum would always have a book in her hand when I was young and passed on her love for reading, inspiring me to venture into writing my own. I tend to have a darker edge to my writing. Not all love stories are made from light, some are created in darkness but are just as powerful and worth telling. When I'm not lost in the world of characters I love spending time with my family. I'm a mum and that comes first in my life but when I do get down time I love attending music concerts or reading events with my younger sister. You can find me on facebook where i love interacting with my readers. cooltext1775488617

 About Underneath it All:

If I had known I'd have a hot architect balls deep inside of me before the end of the weekend, I'd have made time for a pedicure. Lauren It's all the little things—the action plans, the long-kept promises—that started falling apart when my life slipped into controlled chaos. After I met Matthew Walsh. I couldn't decide whether I wanted to run screaming or rip his pants off, and most days I wanted a little of both. If I was being honest with myself, it was rip his pants off, ride him like a workhorse, and then run screaming. Matthew A rebellious streak ran through Lauren Halsted. It was fierce and unrelentingly beautiful, and woven through too many good girl layers to count, and she wasn't letting anyone tell her what to do. Unless, of course, she was naked. She wasn't looking for me and I sure as shit wasn't looking for her, but we found each other anyway and now we were locked in a battle of wills, waiting for the other to blink. Sometimes the universe conspires to bring people together. Other times, it throws people down a flight of stairs and leaves them in a bruised and bloodied heap.

  Q&A with Kate:

What made you write this book? The Walsh Series originated from a project I was consulting on last year. An educational organization was attempting to get the legislature to revise regulatory guidance around repurposing Industrial Revolution-era mills and factories for schools, and I met an incredible team of architects in the process. They were some of the most brilliant, complex individuals I'd ever encountered, and they were ridiculously adorable, too. At the time, I was also running into brick walls with my work-in-progress. I took a vacation from that manuscript and started imagining a family of brilliant, adorable architects, and within a few days, Patrick, Matthew, Shannon, Riley, Sam, and Erin were born.

Do either of your characters relate you to or someone close to you? One of my beta readers is also very close to me, and she suggests that touches of me and others in my world show up in my characters, but none of my characters are based on anyone else. In fact, I've tried that and failed – my characters have a mind of their own, and pushing them to conform to preexisting models of speech, behavior, or motivation doesn't work well for me.

What can we expect from your book that's so different from other authors out there?" Architects are a rare breed, and the Walshes take it one step further by dedicating themselves the worlds of sustainability and historic preservation. They're creative and instinctual, and know something about expertly tailored suits and husky growls, and the genre hasn't introduced us to many of their kind. Beyond the focus on architecture is my desire to write people that we think we know, but we have no idea. Andy and Lauren are great examples of characters we think we know – their types – but when we peel it all back, we realize we didn't know them as well as we thought.

What is your writing process like? My brain is a little funky. I'm quite talented with action plans and project management, but I hate forcing myself into those parameters. I can outline a book, but I'll start writing and promptly deviate from the outline. After fighting all of my instincts, I stopped with the structures and apps and rules, and just let the words flow. It exists in a chaotic ecosystem in my head, and I'm praying the dementia doesn't set in too soon.

Excerpt: Tipsy. I was definitely tipsy. Tequila was to blame for the current state of blissfully inebriated affairs, such as they were. His tie sat crisply folded beside his beer bottle, green with small pink shapes, and the collar of his white shirt gaped open. And I wanted to taste him right there. It was late, the bar nearly empty, and far, far past the proper end for a normal business meeting, but this stopped being a business meeting when we walked through the door. None of my other first dates—or fourths, for that matter—involved hole-in-the-wall bars or innuendo-laced discussions of architecture. They never involved Matthew Walsh either. This was all rather peculiar, much like that fun, buzzy feeling in my body. He smiled at me, a smug, knowing expression that told me he was watching my inhibitions evaporate by the minute. "If you hadn't come out with me? What would you be doing tonight?" "I'm not winning at work-life balance these days," I said with a grimace. "I'd probably be working on a few overdue projects." Matthew held up his palm and I stared at it for an embarrassingly long time before meeting his high five. His fingers laced with mine, and for a moment, I could only gape at the way they layered together. He was touching me and I liked it, and somewhere in my head I knew this was strange. I wasn't into boys right now. I mean, I wasn't into girls, either, but I wasn't doing the whole boys and dates and worry about whether I shaved my legs thing. "Balance is overrated." I laughed. "Yeah? And what would you be doing? If you didn't maneuver me into drinking with you all night, that is." "Maneuver? That's strong." He rubbed his thumb against my palm, and I bit down on my lip to prevent the tipsy giggles from leaking out. It was just a thumb circling a palm, and it shouldn't have been especially delightful, but if confronted with a choice between this and calorie-free cupcakes, I saw no contest. I liked this, and I didn't want it to stop.

About Kate Canterbary: Kate doesn't have it all figured out, but this is what she knows for sure: spicy-ass salsa and tequila solve most problems, living on the ocean--Pacific or Atlantic--is the closest place to perfection, and writing smart, smutty stories is a better than any amount of chocolate. She started out reporting for an indie arts and entertainment newspaper back when people still read newspapers, and she has been writing and surreptitiously interviewing people—be careful sitting down next to her on an airplane—ever since. Kate lives on the water in Rhode Island with Mr. Canterbary and the Little Baby Canterbary, and when she isn't writing sexy architects, she's scheduling her days around the region's best food trucks.

When a group of dark magicians reveal themselves to be her captors, she finds herself in the clutches of those who will stop at nothing to uncover the secrets locked within her lost memories. With her life fading under their merciless spells, the need to escape becomes dire.

But can she get out when she doesn’t even know who she is? Can she count on one unlikely ally for help? Or is it already too late for her, a girl without a name?

Almost a hundred years ago, the Enchanters defeated the Lord of the Underworld in one of the most fearsome wars the world had ever seen. The public thinks that this victory means the people are safe. But they’re wrong. The supernatural beasts the Lord unleashed remain on the earth, multiplying and ravaging what’s left of civilization. As long as these monsters exist, mankind will be in danger. And though the government, ruled by the magic-wielding Enchanters, seeks to protect their people, they are too few in number. They need the Defenders – a special class of non-magical humans – to fight the monsters. The Defenders are an elite force, and mankind’s only hope against the horrors that live beyond their gates.
Fourteen-year-old Aurelia “the Firedragon” Sun has been training since she could walk to become a Defender, and her extraordinary combat skills have earned the attention of the powerful government. In fact, she’s been tapped to represent her nation in an international monster-fighting competition, which pits champions from across the globe against creatures of the Underworld in a violent spectacle. If she wins, she will become a full-fledged member of the Defender force.
But as Aurelia moves deeper into the competition, she realizes that all is not as it appears. There’s something sinister behind the competition, something that could change the way she sees everything … and the Enchanters, it seems, are not the heroes she thought. Aurelia begins to ask questions.
But before she can discover the truth, she is pitted against the most dangerous monster in the competition
– one that will take her life if it can .

Teaser from Slam
Her opponents are on the roof. And they’re armed.
Opponents, that’s all they are. The enemy. Not Dom, who taught her to tie her shoes because her father was too busy. Not Laurie, who knows all the best folk songs. Just masked foes, trying to keep her from Damon. Just like the real thing.
Hunkering into the shadow at the edge of the building, she closes her eyes and slips deeply into the centre of her power, imagining the internal light of her Talent filling every cell. Her consciousness has to align completely with her physical body so that she can be both undetectable and ready to act – a perfect Zen state of awareness that she’s spent years learning to achieve. She slides into it, her skin tingling with energy that will protect or attack, as she commands it. This is it, this time. No going back. They won’t let her out on the streets unless she succeeds in this, so succeed she must. And this is her last chance.

About The Authors

About Mary Fan

Mary Fan is a hopeless dreamer, whose mind insists on spinning tales of “what if.” As a music major in college, she told those stories through compositions. Now she tells them through books—a habit she began as soon as she could pick up a pencil. Flynn Nightsider and the Edge of Evil follows a well-received debut novel, a space opera titled Artificial Absolutes (2013), and is the first in the Flynn Nightsider series. Mary would like to think that there are many other novels in her bag, and hopes to prove that to the world as well.

Mary lives in New Jersey and has a B.A. from Princeton University. When she’s not scheming to create new worlds, she enjoys kickboxing, opera singing, and blogging about everything having to do with books.

About Tash McAdam

Tash McAdam’s first writing experience (a collaborative effort) came at the age of eight, and included passing floppy discs back and forth with a best friend at swimming lessons. Tash is a teacher in real life, but dreams of being a full-time writer, and living a life of never-ending travel. Though born in the hilly sheepland of Wales, Tash has lived in South Korea and Chile and now calls Vancouver, Canada home.

About Linda Foster

Linda Foster was born and raised in Colorado, where she still lives with her (very patient) husband and four (very spoiled) ferrets. Linda became an avid reading enthusiast the moment she picked up her first book, and has grown steadily worse. By the time she was 15 years old, her library had become too big for her shelves, and she was forced to donate all her books to the local school, just to make room for new ones. She started writing short novellas for her friends in middle school, and expanded into full-length novels several years later. Soul Bound is her first published novel.

“Emily, I know that you’re out for blood but let’s face it, you don’t have the means to get a woman like Charlette Delacroix,” Shane informed me as I placed around my complex, trying to figure out how I would pay that bitch back for trying to kill me. She obviously believed that offing me would get her Julien but she was sadly mistaken. The look on his face when I told him that Charlette had been the one who attacked me at the club was one I would never forget. He was furious. Unfortunately his expression soon changed to one of brokenness when I ended my relationship with him. It was the hardest thing I had ever been forced to do. I felt like I had no choice. The woman was clearly desperate and would stop at nothing to get Julien to leave me for her. I needed her to believe she had won, to believe that she had successfully caused our demise. But in order to do that I had to hurt the man I loved so desperately. I had to allow him to feel broken yet again and the idea that I caused him such hurt pained me to the core but it was the only way. I needed to find a way to get Charlette out of our lives once and for all. “You think I don’t know that Shane? Do you really think it hasn’t crossed my mind that I am dealing with sick twisted fuck that will stop at nothing to take Julien away from me? His fucking wife!” I growled in his general direction as I continued my pacing. I needed a plan. “Well will you at least sit down and eat something. You’ve only been out of the hospital for ten hours and you really should be resting,” he said as he closed the short distance between us before drawing me up his is arms in an attempt to offer comfort. The resemblance between the brothers was remarkable and in that moment, I gasped at the sudden closeness and felt my stomach churn at the realization that Julien wouldn’t be able to touch me like this until after Charlette was taken care off. Pushing away from Shane I signed and sat on the couch, allowing my head to fall into my hands. My decision to let Julien go at the hospital seemed rational at the time but the more I thought about it the more I wondered just what I was thinking. Shane was right. I had no way of really removing his ex-wife from our lives. Current wife, not ex? Tears welded up in my eyes in an instant as the severity of the situation crashed down on me with its full force. I was no position to take on Charlette. Shane once again closed the distance between us before kneeling down in front of me, “Look, I know you are determined to make this woman pay. To be honest, I’d like to see the old bat pay myself but you are in way over your head,” he began before lifting my face with his hand to meet his gaze. “My bother loves you Emily, together you can stop Charlette. But if you insist on going after her I will help you. Fuck, I have money to blow and damn-it I can’t stand to see a woman cry. Especially since my brother would likely kill me if I allowed you to get into danger. So what do you say?” What do I say? Did he really have to ask? “Fuck yeah!” I screamed as I jumped into his arms, no doubt squeezing the life out of him. “Whoa, whoa. Slow down killer, we still need a plan. Between your fucking determination and my pockets, Charlette should be out of your life soon and my brother will be happy again.” I didn’t let up on his neck, instead I squeezed tighter grateful that I had called him to get me out of the hospital since my friends weren’t speaking to me. Truth be told… I wanted to be close to Julien and Shane was the closest thing I had to him. “Thank you so much Shane, you have no idea how much this means to me,” I hiccupped into his neck, my grip no less tighter than before. “I am a lover at heart. Shit I’m French remember?” he chuckled softly. How could I ever forget? I thought to myself.

EXCERPT

Gabriel's room.

She paused, peeking through the slightly closed door to the bed within. She had been in there once or twice when Gabriel had a new CD for her to download, or a book he’d recommended she read. He’d moved in a little over a year ago when Jackie and her boyfriend Ian had to get rid of their last roommate, who had almost set the couch on fire when he’d invited his loser friends over to get high. That guy had been crass, sloppy, and late on the rent more than a few times. Gabriel was none of those things. He had a relatively decent job at an employment recruiting firm while he saved up money to play music full time and get his own place. He tried to keep his messes inside his space, though he wasn't usually around much to make any. And if he did smoke, he had yet to set anything on fire.

He put all the guys she dated to shame and served as the image she used to relieve sexual tension more times than she could count. In her mind he was tender and sweet, touching her skin reverently, laying gentle kisses all over her body. He would take his time making her wet, unlike the last asshole she had gone out with who thought a few licks and a dry finger was all that was required before he could stick it in. Gabriel would know better, would ask her if she was ready and then ease himself in carefully. He would tell her he had been waiting so long for this moment as he stroked her into a frenzy, making her come over and over again with the power of his strong body and gentle words.

Just the thought of it made her body shiver, and before she knew it she was pushing open the door and stepping inside his personal space. Her body hummed just thinking about how he slept in that bed, the sheets rumpled and unmade from when he woke earlier that morning. She thought of the glimpse she caught of him when he came out of the shower. Those tattoos stood out red and black against the sides of his v-shaped torso, the towel riding low on his narrow hips.

Thank goodness he had been oblivious to the pair of brown eyes surveying him from over the edge of the couch.

Now she was standing where he had been when he closed that door. She let her hand run over the dresser as she walked quietly inside, her fingers tapping over his brush, his comb, the deodorant he used. She picked up the bottle of cologne he used and opened it, breathing in the intoxicating scent.

She put the cap back on, careful to place the bottle back where it belonged, and surveyed the rest of the room. Beside the dresser was a pretty nice entertainment center, and on the other side of that was his bookshelf. She had nearly creamed her panties when she found out it wasn't just for show, that he did in fact read when he got the chance, and that they shared similar taste in books. A ridiculously huge rack of CDs and his propped up guitar filled the far corner of the room. The walls were lined with posters of his favorite musicians, as well as mementos from shows he and his band played.

Below those posters was the bed, which was simple. It had metal rungs for the headboard with white sheets and a steel grey comforter. She could still see the indent of his body in the mattress, the curve in the center of the pillow where he rested his head each night. On either side of the bed were small tables with a few drawers each, where pictures of his family and friends rested. She was tempted to open up those drawers and see what he kept in them, but she resisted. She didn't intend to go snooping through his things. All she wanted to do was be in his space, to see the side of him she wasn't usually allowed to see, at least not for long periods of time. Instead she swept her hands over the sheets, letting her legs brush against them where they drooped to the floor.

Nicole wondered as she brought her knee up onto the bed what it must be like to be a girl in this bed with him. Did he sleep with a lot of girls? She knew of at least one girl when he first moved in, his ex-girlfriend Marta. At the time she asked herself what the fuck kind of name was Marta? In this case, it was the type of name a gorgeous half-Indian, half-Spanish girl would have, the kind with long dark hair, golden, almond-shaped eyes and a tall, lithe frame with curves in the all the right places. Her skin was rich toffee compared to Nicole's milk chocolate with red undertones, her height and build making Nicole feel like an overly curvy dwarf, even if she was average in terms of height, and her curves were welcomed by plenty.

What kind of girl did he sleep with now that his ex, Marta, was out of the picture? Nicole only got to visit her sister occasionally during breaks from school, so she never got to see exactly what kind of girl besides Marta could make Gabriel take a second look.

She brought her other knee onto the bed. Resting on all fours, she pretended she was that girl, the one that he wanted. What would it be like to have him lying in this bed next to her, his hips barely covered by these sheets? She crawled closer to the center of the bed, smiling seductively, pretending she was crawling toward a deliciously naked Gabriel instead of the cold indent of his body, when her knee landed hard on something tucked under the sheets. The sound of the TV turning on startled her, as did the image that popped up on the screen. Her mouth dropped, her eyes widened…
