REVIEW BY NADIA CHIEF OBSESSIVE PIMPETTE

***Obsessed by books arc given in exchange for an honest review***
"Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end."
Beautifully written, heart warming read that covers many subjects such as depression, sucide and bullying. It is the story of Quinn who has lived through a tradegy and has decoded to move to Hollywood to start fresh with her cousin Ginger, an upcoming starlet in a soap opera. Ginger encourages her to live and at a party she encounters Chase. He is a child star now chasing the A list and yet he falls in insta-lust  with a gorgeous girl in an old pair of high tops.
Quinn struggles with this, unable to let go of her past demons.
"I wanted him to know. I wasn't like the other girls in there. I wasn't an actor. In my own way, I guess I was trying to warn him. I was broken. Empty inside."
The story slowly reveals their pasts and with a few dramas along the way this book captivated me from the first chapter. I connected with Quinn and rejoiced when she decided to rejoin the world. Chase is a sexy man and I loved reading how he evolved into more than just a fame hungry stereotype. Ginger added humour and I hope she will one day get her own story...hint hint!

I really enjoyed this romance and loved the style in which it was written. An inspiring upbeat story that shows love is a great healer.

REVIEW: PATCHWORK MAN & PATCHWORK PEOPLE BY D. B MARTIN @StorytellerDeb

Patchwork Man

Have you ever met a patchwork man?

Lawrence Juste is one. The QC with a conscience - privileged, reputable and emotionally frozen. The perfect barrister. But Lawrence hasn't always been who he is now. When he is glaringly in the public eye after his enigmatic wife is killed in an apparently random hit and run, he could do with his hidden past surfacing like a hole in the head. Unfortunately the past has a way of finding its way back to you, just like betrayal. His dead wife has helpfully left him a sinister resume of his, and she just keeps adding to it...

Patchwork Man is a psychological thriller as fast-paced as any of Dan Brown's, whilst evocatively recreating the chaotic and poignant childhood that has led Juste, the patchwork man himself, to chaos.

'Gripping all the way through...'

'Compelling.'

'Patchwork Man' is the first in the Patchwork series. 'Patchwork People' - the second in the series - will be released in September 2014

Patchwork Man

This is the first in a trilogy of mystery books by D B Martin following the lawyer Lawrence Juste. He appears to have the world at his feet until his wife is killed in a hit and run accident....it's seems a straightforward accident but this is just the beginning of Lawrence's discovery of his wife's activities.

The story was suspenseful with so many relationships that were interrelated into many areas of his life and childhood. The author has written a captivating mystery that has many parts to it. Ms. Martin creates a mystery so full of suspense with woven webs of twists and turns you really have to pay attention to keep up with events unfolding. The author takes us through many flashbacks of the character's lives within the story, which enables the reader to understand Lawrence's reaction and behaviours to many situations. Just as we learn more of the characters, the mystery deepens and the story becomes more suspenseful. The author seems to have the uncanny ability to keep you in suspense until she is ready to let you know what is really going on. She has characters that the reader can relate to. I was just sorry when it ended and I really want to know how things are resolved!!

3 1/2 stars Emma Scott

Patchwork People (The Patchwork People Series Book Two)

Lawrence Juste QC has already had to face the public appearance of a long lost and criminally inclined brother, the renewed attentions of a boyhood bully, threatening to ruin him professionally and financially, and the machinations of his dead wife apparently keen to do the same. What else could go wrong?

Plenty.

It seems it can only end one way for Lawrence - disaster; unless...

♥♥♥♥REVIEW BY EMMA MISTRESS OF ALL DARK & TWISTED♥♥♥♥

Patchwork People

This is the second book in the Patchwork People murder mystery trilogy by D B Martin. Lawrence Juste has serious problems: Murder, blackmail, and a desperate need to close down this horrible nightmare that his wife’s murder has left Juste a wreck and on the brink of joining his wife’s fate.

As the blackmail letters start to come in Juste finds himself in yet another situation where his past could come back to haunt him. What will he do to silence his blackmailer? Will his secrets be exposed? This intense thriller was a really, really good read.

I highly recommend this book if you love a mystery with rich characterization and a vast background and to be honest, who doesn't? There is a third book coming out and I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next in Lawrence Juste's chaotic yet exciting life.

REVIEW@ SHAMELESS BY NINA LEMAY @NinaLemay

                                    Shameless

by

Girls like me don’t get happy endings.

I know what I am. At worst a cliché, at best a cautionary tale. I put an international border between me and my past, only to wind up working in a low-end titty bar. Even my excuse is as lame as it gets: I’m paying for college, getting my art degree from Montreal’s most prestigious school. Although some days it becomes confusing: am I just a student who moonlights as a stripper, or a stripper who masquerades as a student?

But the inevitable happens and my two lives collide. And now there’s one other person who knows both the quiet, antisocial Hannah and the sensual, shameless Alicia. One person who keeps my secret.

He’s beautiful, he’s sophisticated. He comes from the other side of life, the one where I’m not wanted or accepted. But he calls me la petite Américaine, and his hot, hot hands on my skin promise me things I long ago gave up on.

The problem? He teaches my Classic Photography class.

This is a standalone novel, no series, no cliffhanger

REVIEW BY NADIA CHIEF OBSESSIVE PIMPETTE

***Obsessed by books arc copy given in exchange for an honest review***

"I do this every night, several times a night. I give men what they want and make them fall in love with me a little bit."

Hannah is an all American girl funding her way through college in Montreal by being a dancer in a strip club. Emmanuel is a lecturer teaching photography. Unbeknown to either of them when Hannah performs in the champagne lounge one night for him, a gift to welcome him home. What follows is forbidden romance between student and teacher. They are dealing with a taboo love and are they willing go risk losing everything for one another? The pain, angst and emotional journey they face for falling in love with someone they shouldn't is well written and keeps you turning the page.

Emmanuel, is a hot sexy tattooed professor, who is fighting his personal demons and is not capable of letting go of the past or of seeing who Hannah is in her own right. Hannah also misjudges herself and allows the embarrassment of an incident in her youth colour everything she currently does. She shapes the person she is by the person she was...and she never comes to term with herself as a victim. This is a four star read for me as Hannah never really accepts that she isn't to blame and she should stop running.

'"I am not broken," I say slowly."And I don't need fixing, or saving, or whatever the hell you think you're trying go do right now."'

Unfortunately Hannah as the book continues this is exactly what you need but at times I question if Emmanuel is too blind to see what he has. Their story takes some twists and turns that I guess was inevitable in their circumstances. Hannah although not the most likeable character goes through so much and her stoic nature ensures she survives. They face much heart ache, tears and trauma. This book encompasses many issues such as bullying, addiction and non consensual sex which makes it a gritty and real read.

I really hope they get another book as their HEA was still a distant light and no where near certain. I would like to revisit them again sometime soon. Karma also needs to pay Audrey and Leary a visit as they got off far too lightly. Overall I enjoyed this novel but found it lacked the spark of hope, it was a little too based in the unfortunate reality that humanity sucks as we are all too eager for self advancement at the costs of others pain. It is an excellent thought provoking read...we really should never judge a book by it's cover ;)

REVIEW BY JEN GIGGLES OBSESSIVE PIMPETTE

This book is really a coming of age tale with humour and hot sex. The story is focused on Fiona and James. Fiona is a college freshman discovering herself and her sexuality. She's outspoken and loud but a very lovable character. James is a former child actor who is aloner and trusts no one.

They randomly hook up at a concert and they part ways. The tale then follows Fiona's journey in college as she tries to join a sorority. She and her fellow pledges must compete in activities to win a date with James! But she and James are the only people who know about the concert hook up.

This book had me stucked in from beginning to end. I loved the style of writing and how each character was well developed. I'm so blown away with this book. I really like the comedy element of Fiona. She's so confident and proud of who she is. She is an easy character to relate to. I give this book 6 out of 5! Hahah. See! It's that friggin good. Go read it now!

Excerpt:

“Leave,” James repeats. The word sweeps over the boys surrounding me like an icy cold breeze from the asscrack of Antarctica. He’s really got the serial killer vibe going on. Even I have to resist the urge to jump up and run for the hills. I don’t blame my harem for scattering, leaving me sitting exposed and undefended on the counter, at the mercy of James Reid.

I point at him. “You scared away my harem.”

“Those guys were looking at you like you’re a piece of meat.” His tone is thick with disgust.

“Technically I am a piece of meat. Plus bones and stuff. Also, don’t you think that’s a bit hypocritical?”

I expect him to scoff at this, to shrug it off or deny it. Instead he cuts his eyes away from me. “I’m sorry,” he says finally. “I shouldn’t have jump—”

“Jump-started my car for me,” I interrupted loudly, fully aware that Sigrid is straining to listen in on our conversation, even if she is across the room. “You’re right. You should have just let me take it to the shop. Some things should be done by professionals.”

A ghost of a smile traces its way upward from the corners of his lips. It’s the first time I’ve seen him smile, and damn, is it dangerous. I swallow and look away. “Although—even though I know that I shouldn’t have let you near my car, and you’re definitely not coming near it again, you don’t need to apologize. At the time, I really wanted you to jump-start my car.”

My phone buzzes. I glance down. A text from Iris. Think of a better euphemism. You’re not being subtle.

“Did you just say I’m not a professional?” he asks, leaning one-handed on the counter so that his thumb is bare inches away from my thigh. He’s close enough to count the goose pimples that appear on my skin.

“Definitely an amateur,” I smirk.

His hand inches closer. “Why don’t you call me next time your car needs some work done and I’ll show you more of what I’m capable of.”

Q/A with Sydney Logan How did you come up with the idea for this story? They say to write what you know, so for Lessons Learned, I knew I wanted to write about teaching since that’s my “day job.” Thankfully, I haven’t had to deal with the traumas my main character faces. I also knew I wanted to write a love story with a message, and bullying is such an epidemic in our society that I wanted to highlight that in this book. Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing? The most challenging thing is balancing writing and promotion. I’m not very good at it. It was easier when I only had one book, but the more I write, the harder it gets to juggle it all. I’m not complaining, because I love it, but that’s the biggest challenge for me. What are your current projects? I’m getting ready to release a holiday collection of short stories titled Once Upon a December. It will include two previously published Kindle short stories along with a new short story. It will release on November 28. I’m also working on my fourth novel.   Excerpt: Chapter 1 The piercing chime of my phone jerked me awake. Disoriented and shaking, I grabbed my cell and struggled to focus on the screen. Congratulations, Sarah. You slept a whole three hours. Falling asleep had been difficult. My restlessness could easily be blamed on yesterday’s long drive or spending the night in a new place, but I hadn’t slept well in months, so my fitful sleep wasn’t all that surprising. However, I could do without the nightmares. It was nearly three in the morning when I’d finally arrived in Sycamore Falls. Exhausted from the drive, I’d collapsed on the couch, but sleeping proved impossible. It was just too quiet. I’d grown accustomed to noisy neighbors and blasting car horns. A change of scenery could be exactly what I need, my therapist had told me. Sycamore Falls was definitely a change in scenery. Stiff and sore from the uncomfortable couch, I groaned as I struggled to sit up. My body trembled when my bare feet hit the hardwood floor. I’d forgotten how cold this house could be, even in the summer, but anything with long sleeves would be in a box, and all the boxes were arranged in a chaotic mess in my living room. Maybe some sunshine will warm me up. I wrapped my blanket around me and circled the maze of boxes before shuffling toward the kitchen. It was neat and tidy as ever, with its faded yellow wallpaper. Grandma Grace had always loved wildflowers, and I smiled as I gazed at the collection of daisy canisters lining the wall next to the sink. Mom had been a terrible cook, so grandma had taken it upon herself to teach me. Baking was my favorite, and we’d spent countless nights in this kitchen with my apron covered in flour. Grandma had been fine with making a mess—as long as I cleaned it up—and that freedom had led to many honest discussions throughout the years. “Sycamore Falls has its issues,” Grandma had told me one autumn day while teaching me how to make fried apple pies. “We’re too sheltered from the rest of the world. Sometimes that’s a good thing. Sometimes it isn’t. The world can be a scary place. It’s good to know you have a safe place to come home to when the world gets a little crazy. You’re one of the lucky ones, Sarah. You will always have a home here. Remember that.” I remember. I opened the front door and was instantly greeted with cool morning air. Eager to see the house in the daylight, I gingerly walked down the steps and onto the sidewalk. Thankfully, Mr. Johnson had hired someone to mow the grass before I arrived, which allowed me to mark one thing off my to-do list. As I gazed up at the house, I could see my list would be long. Growing up, I’d thought my grandmother’s home was the most beautiful in Sycamore Falls. Majestic and blue with its white shutters and wrap-around porch, it was the place I’d always felt the most comfortable and safe. Time hadn’t been kind to the house, and that was my fault. Mr. Johnson had done his best, but a house needs tender loving care, and its last two years without an occupant had been rough on the place. The chipped siding needed a coat of paint, the flowerbeds resembled a jungle, and some of the shingles needed to be replaced, but none of that mattered. I felt a small sense of satisfaction and breathed a sigh of relief. I was safe. I was home.   About Sydney Logan: sydney loganAmazon bestselling author Sydney Logan holds a Master's degree in Elementary Education.
