Obligation is book 2 in The Underground Kings series by Aurora Rose Reynolds. This book follows Kai Kauwe and Myla. Readers familiar with Auora's books first met Kai in Until Trevor from her Until series and he's always been a character hidden in the darker areas of these books, he became more prominent in Assumption the first book of this series and I've always wanted to know more about him.
Kai has seemed an enigma from the start; closed off and dangerous. Like still waters that run deep; appearing safe but lurking under the surface is something powerful and intimately deadly. There had to be more to this powerful businessman than criminal connections and a very formidable presence.
In this book we discover Kai is controlling, protective and finds it hard to communicate and be accountable, but he loves fiercely. This love only intensifies when he meets Myla, they have always had a connection from the day they first met many years ago, an encounter Myla doesn't recall at first. He's always been a man of his word and he always keeps his promises: " I promised I would protect you. Trust me to do that."
He has followed in the footsteps of the men in his family, through necessity and not choice. He realises he does not want to be involved with that dark world forever; looking over his shoulder and not trusting anyone, placing family and friends at risk by being with him and through protecting Myla he realizes he needs to step back even sooner in order to keep his promise to her. Will he be able to do that without risking what he's always dreamed of having though, or will the darker side of his life and Myla's past have other plans for him?
Myla, Kai's now wife, is a resilient, strong but broken soul. She's lived a life of significant losses and has been on her own for many years after suffering at the hands of someone she trusted. Forced to live with Kai in his mansion in Hawaii due to issues outside of her control. She finds it hard to fight the attraction she has to Kai but wonders can something ever done out of a sense of Obligation become genuine and real?
This is Aurora Rose Reynolds at her best. Characters you instantly love and a story line that keeps you hooked till the last past. Kai and Myla are two people destined to be together but will their pasts come back to haunt them leaving their future an uncertainty?

Excerpt
I feel the sun on my closed eyelids and something sharp poking me in the face. Moving my hand, trying to get away from the pain, I whimper when it scrapes against my cheek. I lift my head and run my fingers along the side of my face, feeling wetness. Opening my eyes to see a light smear of blood on my fingers. I flip my hand over, and then I see the gaudy ring that is now taking up residence on my ring finger.
“Great,” I whisper, closing my eyes and laying my head down again.
I prayed earlier, before I went to sleep, that when I woke up, the ring I’m wearing now and the man who put it there would be nothing but a bad dream. No such luck. I roll over and take a shaky breath, wanting to close my eyes for a few more seconds, wishing I could just sleep until everything was back to normal.
