I always
thought having my own place meant that nobody would bother me. Unfortunately
for me that's not the case which is why it's barely eleven AM, and I'm being
woken up by my brother and his wife banging on my front door. Remind me why I
wasn't an only child.
It takes me
more than a few minutes to get my bearings and stumble to the door. By the time
I get there, I'm fairly certain my neighbors are ready to murder me and my
family members. I can see it now. We'll be the lead story on tonight's newscast
- "Prominent Savannah residents beaten to death due to noise ordinance
violation" - or something close to that. I should've been the reporter
instead of Tom.
"Some
of us aren't used to being up at the crack of dawn on a holiday you know,"
I grumble as I open the door to let them in. They don't waste any time pushing me
aside so they can enter, both grinning at me like loons.
Thomas
claps me on the shoulder, hard, as he walks past me into my living room, taking
a seat on the couch and pulling his wife Emma down beside him.
"Considering today would normally be a workday, and it's after eleven, I
think you'll survive," he says wryly before turning on my television.
"Make
yourself at home why don't you." My tone is sarcastic, but it doesn't
bother him.
Tom just
waves a hand at me and goes back to ESPN, saying, "Go get dressed. We're
hungry, and we have something to tell you."
Grumbling
about annoying siblings and in-laws, I slam the door to my bedroom and search
for something to wear. The week leading up to the wedding was a clusterfuck and
laundry was so far at the bottom of my to-do list I'm down to boxers given to
me as gifts and t-shirts I haven't worn since college. Hmm. Maybe I can talk
Emma into taking all this home with her and washing it for me. There's a
thought.
I don't
bother to shower or shave because who knows what my brother and his wife will
get into while I'm out of the room. After throwing on an old, grey Georgia tee
and the least dirty pair of jeans I can find I walk into the living room to
find them making out like teenagers on my couch.
"Thanks,"
I say dryly. "Disinfecting my couch is exactly what I wanted to do
today."
They break
apart, looking like children who've been caught being naughty, Emma's face is
flushed and Tom's grin is devious. "Sorry, little brother," he says
with a laugh, "but could you leave for just five more minutes?" Emma
gasps, smacking him on the arm before hiding her face in his chest.
"Five
minutes? Wow. I'm sorry, Emma." When Tom's eyes narrow, I ignore him,
looking only at her. "You should have gone after me. I guarantee it would take
longer than five minutes." When I do look at my brother, he's glaring at
me. If looks could kill...well, let's just say I'm glad they don't. One side of
my mouth lifts up as I leer over at my shy sister-in-law. "I'd make sure
you left my bed happy at least."
Tom jumps
over the back of the couch to chase after me, leaving his wife with her face
now planted in the cushions of my couch as she giggles. "What's wrong,
Thomas?" I taunt as I stand on one side of my kitchen island while he
stands on the other trying to figure out how to get to me. "Can't handle
the truth?" He lunges for me with a growl, but luckily he's two years
older, and twenty pounds heavier, so I get back to his wife before he does.
Pulling her up in front of me, I spin her around to face me and smirk at my
brother. "Leave me alone or your wife gets it!" I make like I'm going
to kiss her, and he freezes.
"Don't
you dare!" I know I'm pushing just a little too far over the line, but I
can't help myself. I dip her backwards and plant my lips just to the side of
her mouth, so even though it looks like I kiss her, I don't, before standing
her up straight again.
Emma's
hands push against my chest before she turns to face my brother. "Wow
Tommy, he's good at that." Tom and I both stare at her in shock now,
surprised she got into the game. Normally she's quiet and shies away from any
touch other than his. She looks between us both before she looks back at Tom
with a grin. "He kinda looks like that guy from Once Upon A Time. The one
who plays Hook. He's yummy!"
Tom jerks
her over to where he is, wrapping his arms around her and pulling her close
while glaring over at me. "Don't touch my wife, Jack. Her mouth is
off-limits to everyone but me." They've only been married since June, and
he's still just as possessive as he's been since they met. My parents swear
that's how they knew they'd get married. He'd never acted that way about a
woman before.
"Yeah,
yeah. Whatever. I've heard that all before." I wave off his words. We both
know I'd never go after my brother's wife. I just like to wind him up. Putting
an arm around Emma's slim shoulders, I pull her into my side and look down at
her. "So, sis, where are you taking me for lunch? All this foreplay has me
starving."
She blushes
once more before looking up at me. "Moloney's." I haven't been there
in years, so I don't argue, even though I'm in more of an eggs and bacon mood.
"Awesome.
Let's go before I take you back to my room -" I waggle my eyebrows but
before I can continue the sentence, Tom smacks me upside the head.
He glares
at me, pulling his wife away and shoving me to the side. "Don't even
finish that sentence."
