Review: Freakshow by Jaden Wilkes @JWilkesAuthor

BLURB:

She’s a freak

Born with congenital analgesia, Olivia York’s inability to feel pain is expected—feeling nothing at all is not. Betrayed and unemployed, Olivia joins Cirque des Curiosités, a traveling circus with heavy emphasis on the strange and exotic. She’s hired to sell tickets, but when her unique oddity is discovered, she becomes Orion the ringmaster's assistant in a dangerous performance on the centre stage.

He’s off limits

Cairo, the son of the Cirque's ringmaster is the one man Olivia needs to stay away from. But his rippling muscles, dark tattoos and sensual lips intoxicate her, and before long she surrenders.

When girls start to go missing, her burning need to solve the unfolding mystery leads her to After Dark, the erotic late-night version of the Cirque. Orion is determined to break her bond to Cairo through any means possible, even if it leaves Olivia scarred or dead.

In a world built on illusion and deception, Olivia’s quest to feel something more than curiosity might come at a very steep price.

** Deals with sexual themes that some readers may find offensive. This is a standalone dark urban fantasy novel.

You know Jaden surprises me again with this book, it is freakishly fantastic and I loved every minute of it. After reading the blurb you think that this book is going to go one way and it pleasantly surprises you by going in another direction.

Have you ever felt like you never have fitted in anywhere in your like, that you are somewhat a freak.
This is how Olivia has felt in her whole life, born with a congenital defect where she feels no pain, I mean can you imagine that, never being able to feel pain. This young woman, has grown up feeling like a freak, but also it has made her a strong person, someone to admire deep down.

After feeling the final betrayal from her boyfriend and best friend, Olivia decides to take control and as they say runs off and joins the circus. This is no ordinary circus it is the Cirque des Curiosités, a place full of delights and curiosities.
Once there, Olivia starts to feel the sense of belonging within the circus, which is full of extraordinary people. One in particular Cairo.

Cairo is a man that has a secret, and you are desperate to find out what it is. A man that has come back to help his family run the family business and to keep the circus afloat.

This read will definitely have you hooked from page one, Jaden has a mind that is so excellent she has produced a fantastic, curious read. There are some dark elements to this read that might affect some, so beware.

This was a freakishly fantastic read and I cannot wait for more of Jaden's books.

"I carry the universe in my house of flesh, I will love you until the last star burns out and the heavens descend into darkness."

Olivia feels no pain. Born to be something other she feels she is an outsider in a world full of people who values only the normal, only the usual and she is anything but. Losing her parents and her grandmother young, left to be raised by her resentful older sister Olivia is adrift in a sea of normalcy that is slowly drowning her. Applying out of pure desperation she finds herself employed by the Cirque des Curiosities. And so begins her journey into self discovery, acceptance and all consuming love that is destined.

Entering the world where normal is not defined, Liv for the first time feels a sense of family. Exploring the new world she is now part of she tries to hide her own secret but there is more going on than she realises. Caught between father and son Liv can't distinguish between her instincts to flee or to open her heart. Orion, Ringmaster and the ultimate man in control, is Cairo's father and he takes delight in keeping Liv away from his son. Cairo ignites a fire in Liv that she has literally never felt before, he consumes her thoughts. Traditions and promises need to be continued and kept but Liv is the unexpected. Her appearance changes everything and her uniqueness fuels Orion's thirst to inflict pain and so begins the perfect pairing as the main attraction. A woman who feels no pain as the maniacal ringmaster throws his knives into her unfeeling flesh...what could possibly go wrong?

Freak show is a walk on the wild side; resplendent with bearded ladies, clowns, contortionists, sword swallowers, lions and tigers and bears...oh my! What goes on after dark is exactly that - dark. Greed and a twisted sense of family, Cirque des Curiosities has many secrets. Can an outsider ever really be accepted by the Freak Show? A completely different read that I devoured in record time. I lived the premise and the way the story turned into something delightfully unexpected. Well written, with engaging characters I laughed and cried with them. A gratifying no holds barred ending left me in desperate need for another ticket for this crazy ride. Loved it!

A five star freaky read.
