I wake up to the heat of someone’s palm against my shoulder. Twisting around, my hand moves faster than my brain, and I snatch it off me.
“Jesse, it’s me, Bell,” she rushes out before I can take it any further.
“Fuck.” I release my grip on her arm and sit up, forcing myself back to the here and now.
“Did I hurt you?” I reach for her searching for any sign of a mark left by me.
“It’s fine. You barely touched me.” She holds her arm out letting me inspect it. I check it over one more time before releasing her and relaxing.
“You wanna talk about it?” I study her face, eyes calm, soft mouth. She’s not freaking out.
“Just some shit that visits my dreams sometimes, nothing that needs to touch you,” I reply, shocked I’m not retreating.
“I don’t mind, Jesse,” she pushes, and I almost cave. Almost.
“The last thing I want to do is talk about this shit, Bell.” She doesn’t argue or press, and I’m grateful for it. I don’t think I’d be able to keep my cool if she did.
“Come back to sleep.” She lies back down and I follow her. She doesn’t ask me any more questions, or make me feel like I need to tell her everything.
“That ever happens again, don’t wake me,” I warn. A menacing thought strikes through me picturing what could have happened if I didn’t wake in time. She’s lucky I didn’t hurt her, like the last time a woman touched me while I had a nightmare.
“You don’t always have to be so brave, Jesse.” Her hand moves to my dog tags. I don’t stop her. I’m starting to like the feeling of her hands touching them.
“Never tried to be, Bell. But talking doesn’t help me. Never has.” I think back to the time when I did try and it forced me out of control. Talking about those triggers only amplified my insecurities. When death sits afar, mocking you in the dangerous confines of your surroundings, it fucks with your head; nothing was going to change it.
Besides, my issues weren’t what I had done. They were what I had survived. My conscience wasn’t clear and my honor wasn’t clean.
“Promise me you won’t touch me.” I keep my tone even, controlled.
“I promise.” I take her hand in mine and bring it to my lips. Maybe one day I will let someone in. Let her in.
Today isn’t that day.
But today, I didn’t push her away.
That has to count for something.
"God, grant me the serenity to accept the memories I cannot change, the courage to heal the wounds I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Amen."
Jesse is a haunted man, no escape even when he sleeping, his past refuses to give him any peace. A life of duty and service has left battle scars that run deep. Now part of the Knights Rebels, Jesse is known as the joker and clown. Always full of jokes and a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes, Jesse hides behind his light hearted persona to keep the devil on his back in the shadows. Jesse has been the shoulder that Kadence has cried on and has been a tower of strength, forging a special friendship with Kadence during her darkest times. Jesse is a troubled but loveable rogue. Cleverly linking in with previous events in the series having met Nurse Bell when she is the attending nurse that cares for Holly, Kadence and Jesse we have already seen how the pair interacts. He shamelessly flirts with her unable to believe she is immune to his charms. Bumping into one another on a casual night out, events spiral out of control and Bell re assesses what she wants from her life.
Shattered by the disappearance of her sister, Bell has become routine in her approach to life. Walking a fine line to ensure her parents are reassured that she is safe but trying to live not just exist, Jesse makes Bell open her eyes to the possibilities that surround her. Pushing her boundaries Bell decides that the Knights Rebels may hold the answer to what happened to her sister Paige. Asking for Jesse's helps starts her on a path she is unwilling to deviate from no matter what obstacles block her way and with each step she becomes stronger and more determined. She emerges like a caterpillar from her cocoon and evolves into a stunning butterfly.
This story is beautifully woven, entwining raw hurt and pain intricately with hope and love. With River Savage's spell binding prose this story gets under your skin and I was unable to put my kindle down until I had read it from cover to cover. As always River does not shy away from hard hitting and uncomfortablely real issues. Jesse survived a trauma during his service, he struggles to live with the guilt and doubts his worth. PDST is often swept under the carpet as is many mental health issues yet these topics are embraced and tacked head on, not given the magic wand treatment but given a voice. Treated with empathy and respect this story is not only a wonderful love story between two damaged souls that battle to heal one another it's a testament to the author's ability to blend realism with escapism. Jesse, hot damn, is one messed up adorable biker that has earned a spot in my heart. Bell, her journey and inner strength is refreshing and she is the perfect match for Jesse, quickly becoming part of the Rebels sassy ladies. Without giving too much away I laughed, I smiled, I had tears rolling down my cheeks and yes my kindle practically sizzled at times. Dealing with your past is never easy but can Jesse bury his ghosts?
An amazing best one yet 5 star read.

OK I'm a huge Knight rebels fan and loved nix, didn't think I could love another, then there was Sy and we'll I loved him better and when I realized this book was Jesse's I wasn't sure I would like it cause I mean how can it get much better than Nix and Sy well let me tell you his name is Jesse and boy oh boy he knows how to use words. he could talk you right out of your panties at same time make you want to slap him. This story was so good and it will hit home for alot of people who are familiar with PTSD, it can affect you even if you've never been to war. Jesse is a man's man he don't show the weak side of himself, the side that he fights everyday, he only let's what he wants people to see show. We met nurse Bell in incandescent and affliction, well her and Jesse still have chemistry but to Jesse it's a game as well cause she doesn't give in to the sexy words and that a challenge for him among other things, but Bell has her own demons to fight and she decides to ask Jesse for help. Attending a club party and seeks him out, but what happens once she finds , well I'm not telling cause I don't want ruin it but these two make happy and pissed off at the same time, can they ever admit their true feelings or will the demons of their life always win. loved, loved it. River never disappoints. I was drawn in from the start.
