Hunters – Taken From Chapter Four – Memories (Abigail)

***
That night, I dreamt of before.
My mother had been always sad. That’s how I remembered her. I didn’t have one memory or a photo of my mum happy. My memories start from the age of four, people say it’s not possible, but I have them and my mum has been always sick. I remember sitting on the stairs and the doctors talking to my father. I wasn’t sure at the time what they were discussing, but later I learned it was because my mother wasn’t getting better.
Dad had to work, there was no two ways about it so mom took care of us. The first day, my dad was worried when he left me and my brother, who was only three at the time, in my mother’s hands. That first day, I was five. I stayed in my room and kept my brother with me, playing a tea party with Mr. Bear and Diana, my rag doll. Hunger was one reason for leaving the room. I would pass the sitting room door where my mother sat, staring out the window. Her brown eyes darted to me, freezing me to the spot. I was afraid to move, but I didn’t know why.  I just felt afraid of her. I would make a peanut butter sandwich for myself and some Ready brek for Sam; I had seen dad make it before so I was careful. It took me a while as I pulled the chair around the kitchen, reaching the presses and the microwave. I turned to go back upstairs, but my mother blocked the door. I stood still, hoping she wouldn’t see me.
She was always so quiet, but on this day, she spoke, “If your dad thinks that I don’t mind you and Sam, he will send you away and you’ll never see us again.”
She knelt down, taking the food from my hands and placing it on the floor. Her face softened and she hugged me. I didn’t hug her back. She cried, saying she was sorry for everything. She pulled back and handed me my food and returned to her seat in the sitting room. I raced up to Sam. His food was cold, but he ate it. He was quiet for a child, well, I realized later on that three year olds are not always as good. We would play up there for the rest of the day until Dad got home from work. I would race into his arms and hug him tightly, knowing everything would be okay.
“Did you have fun with your mum, today?” Dad asked.
I thought of what mommy had said to me; I didn’t want to go away from Daddy or Sam. So I nodded, smiled and went back to playing with Mr. Bear. This became our routine for the next month.
Memories flashed through my mind, snippets of talking to Sam, playing games, saying goodbye as Dad left for work and greeting him when he got home. My mother’s empty eyes, and then the memories stopped, slowing down to another one.
“Sam, I’m going to the toilet, you stay here with Mr. Bear.”
Sam nodded and continued to pour tea for us all. I closed the bedroom door behind me so he would stay in. He was too small to reach the handle. I raced down to the bathroom. The door was open. My mother was lying on the white tile floor. The tiles were red. She looked so white and the knife Daddy always told us not to touch lay in her hand. I noticed that her arm was cut real badly. I didn’t run to her or cry as I was too afraid of what stood in the corner of the bathroom.
A dark figure, like a big man, with a cloak over him stared down at my mum. He scared me. My breath came out in small puffs of cold air. I could see the water that dripped from the tap was frozen solid, held in midair. I looked back at the man, frost was starting to grow on his cloak. He wasn’t the bad man that was always around Mommy. He was different, but still he felt wrong.
I ran back to Sam and closed the door, pulling him into the corner of the room. It was getting so cold that our breaths were visible in front of us. Sam started to cry, but I pulled him beside me while crossing my legs so I wouldn’t pee, but it was so cold and it took Daddy a long time to get home and I didn’t want to go into the bathroom where mommy and the man were.
I could hear my daddy’s scream before he burst into the room, gathering me and Sam in his arms. He was crying. I had never seen daddy cry before.
“I’m sorry, Daddy. I wet myself,” I said.
My dress was ruined. I loved this dress. It made me feel like a princess.
“Did you go into the bathroom?” Dad asked, his voice sounded scared, maybe he’d seen the bad man, but then I remembered all the times he said that it wasn’t real, and that I shouldn’t make up stories, so I didn’t say anything about the man. I didn’t want daddy to lock me in my room again.
“Mommy’s hurt and she was near the toilet I couldn’t go”
He held me tightly and, at the moment, I thought everything would be okay, but I was so wrong.

INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR AOIFE MARIE SHERIDAN

Question: What have you published recently?
Recently I have published Hunters. Demon Series Part one. It will be released on the 1st of October.

Question: What is a typical day like for you as a writer?
Well I work so I don’t have a lot of time to write. My writing goes something like this. If I have a spare moment – grab a pen, the house is empty – type. Quiet at work – get a notepad, ect. Just any moment I can find to write, I will. J But I never suffer with writer’s block, when I finally get to write I know exactly what I want to say.

Question: What types of writing do you do?
Mostly Paranormal/Fantasy but I would love to do a contemporary romance, maybe one day.

Question: What are your favorite characters that you have created? Tell us about them
I just love Cathy. She is part of Abigail’s group. Her story and background are very sad but it gives her a flair. Cathy can be nasty or overly self-confident but she does all this to hide her insecurities her full story comes to light in Book Two (Hunted). But she was fun to write.

Secondly of course is Abigail. She was a very complex character to write. She’s an alcoholic so I had to do a bit of research on this. Also her trauma of seeing her family die has damaged her. She’s fuelled with anger, guilt and self-doubt constantly. We don’t see Abigail in a happy light until we reach Book two (Hunted). We see a more mellow side to her. Over all it was a challenge to write her, but I enjoyed it.

Question: What music do you listen to, while writing?
I have a playlist for hunters. I listened to all these songs on repeat.
1. Another Love By Tom Odell

2. Seven Nation Army By White Stripes

3. Swedish House Mafia (Club scene)

4.Watchtower Delvin Feat - Ed Sheeran

5. Clown by Emeli Sande

6.Runaway By Linkin Park

7. In the End By Linkin Park

8. Talk By Kodaline

Question: What do you eat while writing?
I am not as bad as I use to be, so I don’t really eat, (THAT IS WHILE WRITING) J normally my downfall is caffeine.

Five for Fun:
What is your favourite non-alcoholic drink?  Coffee.
What is your favourite cartoon character? I love the little girl from Despicable me.
What is your favourite movie of all time? War of the Worlds.
What TV shows do you like to watch?  Games of Thrones.
What do you like to do for fun or just to relax? Read, Watch movies or go out for meals.
Question: Where can we find you on the web?

BLOCKED

By Jennifer Lane

New Adult Contemporary/Sports Romance

Released October 21, 2014

College freshman Lucia Ramirez has a secret crush on Dane Monroe. He’s a tall drink of water — blond, brash, and one hell of a volleyball player. Hijole. Lucia hopes her volleyball scholarship to his school will make him notice her.

Too bad what’s noticeable is Dane’s obvious hatred for Lucia. Her family’s politics contradict everything he stands for. And politics are front and center in both their families. Dane’s mother is about to face Lucia’s father in the race for US President.

When Secret Service throws them together, Dane can’t deny his frustrating attraction to Lucia’s athletic curves and sweet faith in the world. Amid the intense pressure of college athletics and presidential politics, can opposites not just attract, but overcome overwhelming odds to be together? Or do their differences block their match from the start?

Excerpt
Now that we were alone in the hallway, my eyes swept up Lucia’s firm body, and I decided to play with her a bit. “Did you hear what one of those reporters said?”
She studied me with nervous eyes, then shook her head.
“They asked if we slept in the same bedroom.”
Her lips parted as she drew a breath, and her face turned a delicious shade of pink. I watched one hand smooth down her thigh, then dart up to the back of her neck. The other hand fidgeted at her side. It looked like she had to force a swallow.
Sweet Jesus. Her embarrassment totally turned me on.
“So, um...what did you tell them?” she finally asked.
A sense of pressure below my belt pulled me toward her. Her eyes widened as I approached, but she seemed more excited than frightened.
Her breezy, floral scent mingled with the liquid courage in my veins, and before I knew it I was running my fingers into her thick, damp hair. What the hell am I doing? God, it felt good, and she tilted her ear toward me like she enjoyed it too. There was a cute little dimple on her right cheek that winked at me. I found myself leaning closer to her face, and considering her impressive height, I didn’t have far to go. Her shiny eyes turned back to me, and she gazed up with such yearning, such depth.
My heart thundered. Stop seducing me, Devil Spawn!
Those sensuous lips opened for me, their sweetness luring me forward. I held my face over hers, breathing in her smell, and her eyes fluttered shut as she surrendered to me. I stared at her soft features for too long, shocking myself with an insane desire to kiss those sweet lips. Before I totally freaked myself out, I shifted an inch to press a kiss onto her warm cheek, right on her dimple. I could feel her tremble beneath my touch.
My hand still tangled in her hair, I pulled back to gaze into her mesmerized eyes. “I told them I never kiss and tell.”
When I let her go, I heard a little squawk of protest. That adorable noise reminded me of the pressure down below — pressure I needed to do something about. I turned and took swift strides down the hall.
“Where are you going?” Her breathy voice was tinged with desperation.

I grinned. She was just too easy to mess with.

Exclusive Excerpt:
I let Blake lead the rest of the distance to the dance floor as I regarded each of my friends wrapped in her man’s arms. Before I could process the way that made me feel, Blake suddenly twirled me under his arm and spun me in a small circle. A smile filled my face as he caught my lower back and pulled me into him, maintaining direct eye contact the whole time. Blake held my frame with a blend of strength and softness that left my mind reeling. From the very first step, he astounded me. He took control and stepped into me, which forced me to take a backward one. Then, he sidestepped to my left, shifting our weight before moving us again. Each step took a full beat of the lovely music filling the room. His stride never hesitated or faltered. They were all taken with confidence and consistency. I picked up his rhythm, and my steps were gracefully flowing with him. He repositioned himself slightly, dropped his right hand to my lower back, stepped outward, and effortlessly guided me into a spin. By the time I returned his hold, his face was alight and focused solely on me. Determination filled his features. “Have dinner with me tomorrow night, Audrey,” he said softly so that only I could hear, still keeping his steps in rhythm. My steps hesitated, but Blake caught me, and we continued to move. “I can’t,” I responded, shaking my head adamantly. He led me into an unfamiliar step and tipped me back. His hands supported my back as it arched. He slightly bent toward me as the song neared its end. His unbelievably blue eyes were inquisitive. “Can’t or won’t?” “Both,” I rasped unevenly, praying for strength to resist this kindhearted man who deserved so much more than what I had to offer him. He leaned in further, close enough to where I thought he was going to kiss me. My breathing deepened as my body became achingly aware of him. My subconscious begged for him to close that tiny gap between us, so I could know what his lips felt like. It was his turn to shake his head. “So, you’re telling me that if I kissed you right now…” He paused as though letting my anticipation heighten or giving me a chance to tell him no. It was a nerve-racking mere seconds as my mind and body went to war. He gracefully slid one hand up to the middle of my back, resting it in between my shoulder blades to support my upper body. “It wouldn’t feel the same to you as it would to me?” He brushed his lips over my own. “And you wouldn’t kiss me back?” The connection between us fogged my mind and judgment. I was not sure if what he’d asked was really a question or a challenge, but my lips longed for him, and they won the heady battle, sealing themselves over his. Bystanders be damned, I kissed him. The first few seconds, he let me explore his mouth tentatively. His full lips were exquisitely soft, curving and molding around mine. Then, as though his resolve broke free, he took over our embrace, controlling it and kissing me ardently, like he needed me to breathe. His hands kept hold of me, supporting my weight, while his mouth captured and tasted, as if he could not stand any space between us, until he and I were gasping for air. Somewhere along the way, the previous song had ended, and a new one was already in full swing. As Blake righted our position, I noticed that Gail, Abbey, and Lily were all watching us with astonished yet dreamy wide eyes. “Now, that was a kiss!” Gail whooped out loud with a smirk, throwing her fist in the air.
