Author Interview

1. My Inspiration for the book came from …

My Black Hole Heart was always going to be the final installment of the Colour Series, I wanted to highlight what would happen to Avery having being raised in such a different reality. Her whole life was dictated by their business and as a result by crime. I wanted to write a female villain. A heroine that my readers had to fight really hard to route for. Avery is two halves of a person fighting to see which one will win.  

2. An introduction to the books characters …

In this book we meet Avery as an adult, we also saw her as a four year old at the end of Monochrome My Madness when Callum Re-enters her world. She is now a ruthless killer and the next in line to run Callum’s criminal empire. Both Callum and Rowan return in this story, now old men having to wrestle the demon that they have raised, I promised an ending for them both and you will get it. There are some new players in this story; Eiran is Avery’s first love and also the source of all her internal conflict. He is deeply disturbed and will make your skin crawl. Harmon, Callum’s youngest half brother and the only member of his family he spared returns as Callum loses faith in Avery and her ability to do her job. Harmon and Avery love to hate each other. One more character will come not play, a doctor, an angel of death and a murderous healer, Mathew isn’t who he seems and Avery has to decide if he is the one she won’t kill.  

3. List the 5 books your HEROINE loves best and why...

Avery isn’t much of a reader; she is a very busy girl. But when she does get a chance to read she likes a happy ending because she believes she’ll never have one.  

4. What drew you to the romance genre? What are your Top 5 or 10 Favorite Romance novels?

I am an almost exclusive Dark Romance reader; I love a good psychological thriller and had got to point where I just couldn’t face reading another cookie cutter book. Cue the fifty shades craze and I read it, it re-ignited my love for romance BUT it didn’t check the boxes when it came to darkness. Then I accidentally bought a book, and because I strongly DISAGREE with amazon’s return policy I read it. I was forever converted by the Consequences Series by Aleatha Romig she showed me that I could have the butterflies of romance combined with the gut churning darkness I needed in a book. She changed me with those books forever, not just what I read - but she is also the reason I started to write my own stories. Top 5 or 10… are you kidding? I have so many, but here are few that will always be on my list. Consequences Series by Aleatha Romig, Deliverance and Vanquish by Pam Godwin, The Decimation of Mae and The Salvation of Daniel by DH Sidebottom, The Empathy Series by Ker Dukey, Monster in His Eyes and Torture Her Soul by JM Darhower, Tears of Tess by Pepper Winters. (Told you I was darkling… read them if you dare)  

5. Five Things You Wouldn’t Know About Me ...

I am qualified as a Landscape Designer and have never once used that anywhere except in my own garden. I loath, hate, detest, freak out over purple candies/sweets and pick them out of everything. I married my high school sweetheart. I read poetry and listen to strange music when I write. I have walked with elephants and dived with great white sharks and tick one such item off my bucket list every year - this year crocodiles… just joking or maybe I’m not.  

6. The Moment That Made My Career as an Author worthwhile ...

I have three - When I got my very first review, it was awful it was 1* and I cried, but it emanate that someone read my book and cared enough to tell me how to do it better. When Mary E. Palmer asked me to work with her on The Goodbye Man. Then I have one that is just special to me, it was a text message from a reader who’s life was touched by my story and that message showed me that my stories matter. I write because I have an infinite love for words and stories multiply in head whether I get them down on paper or not, I never believed I would ever sell a single book other than maybe to my mum. After Alicia had finished with her side work, she returned to the restaurant’s dining room. There, sitting at Table 9, just like before, was Dagon.

“Your man is here,” said Susan. Susan was a vibrant redhead who loved to gab with Gail. It was obvious that Gail had filled her in.

“Yes, I know. I see him.”

“He’s so hot. We never get any hot young things in here. Why don’t you let me wait on him tonight?”

Alicia laughed. “No way. He’s a really good tipper, and I need the money.” Even if Dagon hadn’t tipped her one hundred dollars last night, she wasn’t going to let Susan steal the moment she had been waiting for.

Susan rolled her eyes. “His name is Dagon, right?”

Alicia felt her chest tense up. “Yeah, how did you know that?”

“I told him how cute he was, and I asked him his name.”

“Oh.”

“You’re not mad, are you?”

“No, why would I be mad?” Alicia turned her head away. She was mad, very mad, but when she looked over at Table 9 again, she saw Dagon smiling at her with the same enticing look he had on his face before.

“Slip him my number, okay?”

Alicia turned around. “What?”

“Would you please give him my number?” Susan shoved a small piece of paper into Alicia’s apron pocket.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

“I’m serious, and I’m sure Dagon would go out with me if he knew I wanted to go out with him.”

Alicia reached into her pocket and handed the paper back to Susan. “No.”

“Just give it to him, okay? Tell him it’s from the hot redhead. Would you do that for me, please?”

“Why don’t you do it yourself? I’m not your messenger.”

“I don’t want to interrupt him, especially because you won’t let me wait on him.”

Alicia pushed the note back in her pocket. “Yeah, whatever.” She poured a cup of coffee and headed to his table, leaving Susan standing there.

“Hey, Alicia. It’s so good to see you again.”

Alicia tried not to smile too wide. “Hi. I brought you coffee. Do you want it?”

“Sure.”

Alicia set the coffee down, at which point Dagon handed her another one-hundred-dollar bill.

“Thank you so much.” Alicia tried not to beam. If he wanted to throw hundreds at her, she wasn’t about to complain. She dug into her pocket. “Here’s a note for you. It’s from the redhead who’s staring at us.”

Dagon glanced at the note and then dropped it on the table. He looked at Alicia again. “You’re as gorgeous today as you were yesterday.”

“Thank you.”

Dagon didn’t say anything more. He just stared, seemingly pleased with what he saw. It made Alicia almost melt into herself. He didn’t seem to care at all about Susan or her note.

“Is it just the coffee again?”

“Yes. I’ll enjoy watching you work.”

“Okay. I’ll be back to check on you.” Alicia hurried away to serve her other tables, her heart racing.

She had to leave the dining room to pick up her orders that were ready. But when she came back, Dagon was gone.

His head dropped to look down at his shoes, but I could still see his hesitant expression from where I sat several yards away. He rubbed a hand through his thick hair. “He asked me to leave any explanations to him.”

My dread morphed into irritation. “That sounds like him. Always needing to have the final word.”

The strain left his features at my comment. “So, what do you want me to tell him?”

I stood, setting my glass down on the coffee table. The view of Manhattan outside became larger as I walked to the large penthouse windows. I stared down below at the tiny people walking on sidewalks and the toy cars moving down the street. Inside here, it seemed as if everything had come to a standstill.

It was impossible to pinpoint any one feeling about the possibility of seeing Keenan again. A combination of anxiety, sadness and defiance mingled with something I refused to identify as anticipation.

I imagined an awkward conversation between Keenan and myself. Rehashing our history wasn’t an event I’d enjoy. So he finally knew the truth and in his arrogance had decided it was time for closure. 

He’d always made all the decisions.

Well, this time I’d be the one deciding the outcome. Seeing Keenan would benefit me in no way. It had taken time, but I’d moved on from the heartbreak of our disastrous ending. All evidence proved Keenan had also moved on. Any conversation between us would come too late.

Not turning from the view, I told Darius, “Tell him it was another lifetime.”
